Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Monday’s Levy Letter. I hope your weekend
was good and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight and every night on BBC1
at 6.30pm for Look North. Paul will have the forecast and of course we’ll have
all the stories of the news of the day.

Tonight, my special guest will be Gillian McKeith. I’ve talked about her enough
times in the Levy Letter over the past week. Well, we’ll be talking to her on
the show tonight. If you’re into losing weight and healthy eating at the
moment, especially if you’re into pumpkin seeds and sesame seeds, then
tonight’s the night as Gillian will be with us. We’ll have all the day’s news
as well, so I hope you’ll be able to join me on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Well, as you know I’m trying to follow Gillian’s healthy eating diet and
finding it quite hard and I expect lots of you are struggling with your New
Year’s resolutions to eat healthily and lose weight. Well, tomorrow we’ll have
Rosemary Conley, the diet expert, on the programme. And I want to hear from
you! Like me, are you struggling to keep to a healthy diet? Are you struggling
to exercise regularly and would you appreciate some tips to help you along and
keep you on the straight and narrow? Well, Rosemary will be here to help. I
want to hear from you if you want some help from Rosemary and wouldn’t mind if
we came along to film you. I do need to hear from you as soon as you can, so
that I can set this up. So as soon as possible, just email me with your name
and your problem and of course don’t forget to include a contact number with
your email. As always the email to use to get me direct is [EMAIL PROTECTED] I
hope to hear from you soon.

What’s In A Name

On Friday night, on the programme, we did a Leave it to Levy. One gentleman is
absolutely insisting that we revert to Hull’s proper name of Kingston-upon-Hull
rather than just Hull. We had a couple of interviews on that and then we held a
text vote. And we had, in the space of just ten minutes, nearly eight hundred
texts! And 85% of those were saying it should be Kingston-upon-Hull. Well,
we’ll have an update on that tonight, and if you have any views on that, then
you can always write to the Levy Letter as well. Don’t forget, this week we’ll
have the answer and announce the winner of the Jo Brand competition. We’ll do
that on Wednesday in the Levy Letter and also on the programme as well. So,
there’s still time to get your answers in for that one. Jo Brand – what was her
former job before she became a comedienne?

Shopping

I was saying at the end of last week that in a year’s time the traditional TV,
as we know it, won’t be available to buy in the shops. There’ll just be the
modern flat screen TVs available. These plasma screens will be hung up on the
wall, so that there’ll be more room in the lounge. Our whole lives seem to be
changing – portable CD players also won’t be available by the end of the week
and our shopping is changing as well. It’s believed that by next Christmas,
more people will shop online than in the shops. Now then, I don’t actually
believe that, but that’s what they’re saying. Online shopping boomed in the run
up to this Christmas with one in four gifts bought via the internet. Consumers
spent 4.9 billion pounds online during the ten weeks before the 25th of
December. Now that’s quite incredible isn’t it? 4.9 billion pounds spent online
in just ten weeks! So if anyone out there thinks it’s just the minority, who
are going online to shop, then you’re certainly mistaken. Aro!
und 24 million UK consumers shopped online at some point in 2005. Around 24
million of us – I must be just about the only person, who has not bought
anything online yet! But watch out, I will change that this year, I’m sure! But
as I say, they reckon that more of us will be shopping online, by next
Christmas, than in the shops.

Pregnancy

Well, we briefly touched on pregnancy last week in the Levy Letter, but I see
that eating fish during a pregnancy can boost your child’s brain power and
social skills, scientists revealed today. Mothers-to-be, who consume fish, such
as mackerel and sardines, can also help their child develop better
coordination. The benefits of eating fish, which is an important source of
Omega 3 fatty acids, have been known for some time, but analysis of more than
fourteen thousand mothers and their children show that they are even more
important than previously thought. The research of maternal nutrition and the
effects of these fatty acids was carried out at the National Institute for
Health in America. So there you are, if you’re a mum-to-be, then make sure you
eat plenty of fish, containing these fatty acids, like mackerel and sardines!

Love Life

One in five couples have severe money worries, which affects their love life,
according to new research. A study found that as a nation, we’re becoming so
stressed out at rising levels of personal debt that it’s starting to affect our
health. Well, I don’t think there’s anything new about this either. Money
Sickness Syndrome, they’re calling it! And this troubles more than half of the
population according to the stress expert Roger Henderson. His findings,
published today, come after personal debt broke through the eleven trillion
barrier, the equivalent of twenty-four thousand pounds for every man, woman and
child in this country! That’s quite incredible isn’t it? The average person is
twenty-four thousand pounds in debt! And Money Sickness Syndrome is the new
thing – it is affecting our relationships. Well, I can quite understand that
anyone, who’s severely in debt, that it would affect their relationships. I
think that one of the things that’s still quite a surprise to me!
are the young people in their mid-twenties and the amount of debt they can be
in after they’ve been to University. Of course in my time or our time if you’re
my age, then that didn’t happen. But the average person in this country is in
debt to the tune of twenty-four thousand pounds. Your views on that, of course,
are gratefully received. And of course we want to hear from you if you’ve got a
comment on anything else. Just drop me a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well that’s it from me for today. Have a very good day, have a good Monday.
Enjoy your afternoon and join me tonight for the programme on BBC1 at 6.30pm.
Don’t forget, if you want to drop me a line, then I look forward to hearing
from you.

Take care

Peter
