Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC One at 6.30pm
as ever. I’ll have all the day’s news and Paul will have the forecast for us.
Although I don’t think we need him to tell us that it’s raining! We’ve all
noticed that!

Also on the programme tonight, Look North will be with the hundreds of
protesters outside one of the country’s largest power station.
Environmentalists are campaigning to close the power station claiming it’s a
huge pollutant in the region. I’ll have the full story on that later.

Plus I'll have a special report on the firm that have built Airfix models for
decades, which have fascinated and thrilled so many young boys and older men
for that matter for such a long time. The news has come out that the firm is
about to go into administration. I’ll have the latest on that, plus some
recollections of the wonderful models that I’m sure we all remember building
and hanging from our bedroom ceilings! Well, I can remember that anyway!

Also tonight, we'll relive the history of Sleaford's shoe factory as a reunion
is planned for the weekend. I'll have the latest as preparations get underway
for Mablethorpe's first marathon. Plus find out how you could win tickets to
see the Beautiful south in concert in Lincoln. So a very busy programme. I hope
you can join me tonight.

Structure

As you know, we were talking with Maureen Lipman on the programme last night.
What a wonderful lady she is and what a star. She’s Hull born and bred. She was
on the programme last night talking about the voting for the Unsung Landmarks
from the UK. We’ve got two in the final eight – Grimsby Dock Tower and the
Humber Bridge.
And tonight I'll have the results of which landmark has been classed as the
finest landmark in the country. It’s been a tight competition. Jodrell Bank,
the radio telescope that looks like a huge satellite dish, was a firm favourite
throughout the competition. But after our plea from the acclaimed actress,
Maureen Lipman last night, has our region’s landmarks, the Humber Bridge and
Grimsby’s Dock Tower, crept up the poll. I’ll have the results tonight on the
programme.

Yorkshiremen

If you saw the survey, which said that Yorkshire people were the most
opinionated in the country, then I’m sure you’ll have a view on that one. Can
you believe that? The most opinionated! They’ve of course, picked out the usual
selection of people like Michael Parkinson, Geoff Boycott and also Dickie Bird
as true examples of Yorkshiremen. And they’re apparently the most opinionated
people in the whole of the country. Do you agree or disagree with that one? All
your views greatly appreciated.

Music

If you’re one of these people, like myself, who likes to download music off the
Internet, then this is something of interest to you. I only got into it,
because somebody bought me and Ipod and I managed to follow that through and
buy the tunes from the Internet. It becomes a little bit addictive, so I’m sure
that at 79p a song, myself, like many other people, will be interested to hear
that there is now a possibility of free music downloads to be offered legally
for the first time. Universal Music, who’s stable includes U2, Bob Marley and
Stevie Wonder, has given the go ahead for the launch of an online music store,
which will rely on advertising alone for its revenue and we can download music
for free. So the other companies, who can charge anything from 29p a track up
to 99p a track, might have the pressure on them as people will soon be able to
download music for free. Whether they stop the music half way through and put
an advert on the track, I’m not sure.

Hair

I see that they might be a little bit closer to finding a cure for hair loss,
which is good news. This story caught my eye though, because it’s the sort of
money, which could buy a top class car and could even provide a deposit for a
home. I’m talking about £37,000! For a woman, it seems, there is a far better
way to dispose of £37,000 and that’s on her hair. The astonishing total is
according to research, which says that this is the average a British female
will spend in a lifetime on close attention to her coiffeur. The average woman
will spend £37,000 in a life time on visits to her hairdressers. I guess there
are some people, who will spend less on their hair and will find that figure
extreme to say the least. But I’m sure there are some people out there, who
like to pamper themselves fairly regularly! And that is an average isn’t it?
I’m sure Cherie Blair has increased that figure quite considerably with her
private hairdresser!

Get In Touch

If you’ve got a problem or an issue that you think we could help with on the
programme, then let me know. Give me the details, let me know what the problem
is and of course let me have a contact telephone number for you as well. If you
want to get in touch, then the email address is the same as always, [EMAIL
PROTECTED] And that’s the same email address if you want me to see one of your
photographs. It can be a scenic picture of a view from the region, or something
funny you’ve seen when you’ve been out and about. Just let me take a look at
it!

Events

Don’t forget that if you’ve got an event coming up in the near future then let
me know. If it’s for charity and a good cause and with an amateur group or
society, then get in touch. I could give you a little plug in the Levy Letter
for your event if you’d like. Just drop me a line and let me know. Still the
emails are coming in about neighbours and whether or not you get on with them.
I’ll have some of those in the Letter tomorrow. And also, still the emails are
coming in about Des Lynam. I think we’ll draw a veil on that story now as we’ve
said all we can say about the issue that Countdown will be moving down South.
But still the emails are coming in.

Anyway, that’s it from me for today. I hope you can join me tonight on BBC One
at 6.30pm.

Take care,

Peter
