Hello and welcome to Thursday’s Levy Letter. On tonight's programme, we'll be
asking if the government is going back on its promise to help local councils
with the cost of the summer floods? It seems Gordon Brown's taken his cheque
book away. We'll get the latest on this.

Plus according to the government, we're winning the fight against underage
drinking. New figures suggest fewer pubs and shops are selling alcohol to under
eighteens, but is that really making a difference. We'll hear from the police
and teenagers.

And snooker's top names are in Grimsby tonight - Ronnie O'Sullivan and Jimmy
White to name but two and Look North will be live there tonight. That’s all on
BBC One at half past six as usual. I hope you can join me then.

Of course, I love to hear your thoughts and comments about items that we cover
on the show, but we also like to hear from you if you’ve got a comment about
Look North as a programme. And many of you email or ring in if there’s
something you think we’ve done very well and sometimes when you think we’re not
doing so well and of course they’re all welcome and we read or listen to every
one. Well how would you like the chance to tell us what you think of BBC
programmes? We're looking for people to join audience groups and share their
views. It isn't paid, but you would get expenses and we're keen to hear from
people of all ages and all backgrounds. If you're interested, you can call 0800
068 70 60 for an application form or look at the website at
bbc.co.uk/england/ace. So if you’re interested in television and the way it’s
developing or if you often find yourself screaming at the TV and wishing you
could get in touch with the producers, then this might be of interest to you.
So !
take a look at the website or ring up and find out more.

I don’t know much about trainers. Obviously I’m a suit and tie sort of man! But
when your kids start pestering you for a new pair of trainers for Christmas,
you can tell them in all confidence that there’s no need for them to get the
most expensive pair of trainers in the shop. Researchers are now saying that
expensive trainers are a waste of money and may even damage your feet in the
long term. A £40 pair of running shoes apparently can be just as good in terms
of cushioning impact and overall comfort, if not better, than a £75 pair. Now
is £40 supposed to be the cheap option? I thought they meant £2 from the
market… And who would spend £75 on a pair of trainers?

And here’s the horrific story of the week. When I read this, I just couldn’t
believe that it would be allowed to happen. Apparently a philosopher and
performance artist has announced that he has acquired an ear on his arm. No
don’t worry, this hasn’t just grown there over night, he has spent ten years
trying to find a surgeon willing to perform this controversial operation. I
think we’ve probably all heard the ongoing research into growing organs from
cells in a laboratory and it all sounds like stories from horror books. But it
has huge future implications for being able to grow to demand organs and limbs,
which can then be used in hospitals to save the lives of many people. But this
is slightly off that track surely? Stelios Arcadiou had his ear grown in a
laboratory and then implanted into his forearm in 2006. The Australian-based
artist is hoping to then get a microphone implanted too, which will connect
wirelessly with a Bluetooth transmitter. He hopes that people can t!
hen listen to what his own original ears are hearing. It sounds like an awful
lot of hard work just in the name of art.

And I think we should swiftly move on from that to news of a more refined art
form! Michael Dale has been in touch this morning on the answer phone. He wants
a plug for a forthcoming concert with the Boston Sinfonia. They’re hosting a
concert on Saturday night with the pianist, Ashley Wass. That’s this Saturday
night at St Botolph’s Church in Boston.

Well, that's it from me. Have a lovely day.

Peter
