Good afternoon! Its Peter here with todays Letter. Tonight on the programme, we'll be looking at the NHS dental crisis and speaking with both dentists and dental patients, who say they're struggling to both provide and receive free treatment. We'll have a special report looking at the gaps in the system.
We'll have a special report looking at the migrant families making a new life for themselves in our region. And they're bottom of the pile again. The Channel 4 programme, Location Location Location, says yet again that Hull is the 2nd worst place to live in the country. We'll be putting that to the test. They're cleaning up their act - we'll be finding out how local landmark, Drax power plant, has become greener as it battles against climate change. Damian Johnson will be with us as normal on a Monday for a round up of all the sports news, including looking at the plight of the Imps manager, John Schofield, after his team's four nil thrashing at the weekend. Thats all tonight on BBC One at half past six. Not only have English sportsmen beaten the French at rugby, but also at the World Conker championship. Now Im sure you would have thought that these grown men should have put their conkers to bed, but not so. Ady Hurrell, from Whittlesey in Cambridgeshire was victorious over Frenchman, John Ingram, in the final in Northamptonshire. And there must be a lot of over-grown school boys still playing conkers as over three hundred entrants were attracted by the annual event and thirteen of those were French. Other contestants came as far afield as the US, Brazil, Canada and the Ukraine! Each to their own I suppose! Some people just dont seem to be very fussy when it comes to their milk, but then I know others, who wouldnt dream of using UHT milk on their cereal in the morning. That, however, is the latest scheme to save the planet from global warming. This is all part of a government strategy to ensure that a huge 90% of milk on sale will not require refrigeration by 2020. And it would mean a massive change in habit for shoppers as in Britain 93% of milk sold is fresh. Officials are looking at drastic ways we can change our habits including reducing the number of chiller cabinets in supermarkets and shops. Does this mean theyre hoping well start drinking lukewarm soft drinks too? And another barmy addition to the wish list of the researchers in charge of looking at green issues is reducing methane emissions from dairy cattle by 60% within fifteen to twenty years. I wonder how they think theyll do that! We all have trouble attracting the attention of drivers if we need to be let out of a queue of traffic or attracting the attention of waiters in a busy restaurant, but perhaps were going about it in the wrong way. Smiling is the obvious way, but perhaps not the most affective, which is bizarrely looking terrified. That works far faster apparently. Well, I suppose it would! Our brains process fearful faces a lot faster than those showing other emotions. Its always very strange how our brain works, but researchers say happy expressions take the longest for us to become aware of them. And this is probably all down to our natural instincts. Were tuned to recognise danger far faster so that we can protect ourselves if need be. Very interesting, but perhaps not very useful if you need to get the bill in a busy restaurant!! So thats it from me. Join me tonight if you can on BBC One at half past six.
