Hello and welcome to Monday’s Levy letter. It’s the beginning of a new week,
and I hope it goes well for you. Coming up on the programme today at half past
six on BBC One, we'll be finding out why tens of thousands of pounds in
government flood aid has gone unclaimed in one part of Lincolnshire. If you
think you might be eligible to claim, don’t miss this tonight.

We speak to the post office for the first time since they announced more than
30 closures across our region.

We'll also meet the residents closing the door on trick or treaters this
Halloween.

And we'll be hearing from Andy Bell as he returns from an awards ceremony in
London, after being named the primary school teacher of the year. He’s a
teacher at Metheringham Primary School, and I’ll be saying well done to him on
the programme tonight.

Of course we’ll also have the latest weather forecast, so join me if you can
for Look North at half past six on BBC One tonight.

Chocolate

I had a story in the letter a little while ago about how chocolate’s appeal
comes from its status as a naughty treat. Well soon it might actually be good
for you, if you can believe that!
Incredibly, the makers of a new chocolate bar claim it actually lowers
cholesterol, and is good for diabetics. Each bar contains 60 calories, and is
going to be on sale at £1.75 a bar, which is quite a lot to pay for a chocolate
treat, isn’t it? I’m not sure if chocolate that is healthy and low calorie can
actually be called proper chocolate! The interesting thing is that if the story
I mentioned before is correct, and chocolate’s unhealthy status makes it more
attractive, then perhaps a healthy chocolate bar might actually be less
desirable. Well we’ll have to see what the future holds for this development,
we might live to see the day when you’re encouraged to eat more chocolate as a
way of staying healthy! I somehow doubt it though…

Well continuing today’s chocolate themed Levy Letter, I read some news today
that will no doubt be rolled out as an excuse on countless occasions – yes
trying to give up unhealthy foods altogether can actually make you eat more.
Attempting to exercise total self control and block thoughts of fattening
confectionary can backfire, subconsciously putting that thought firmly in your
mind.
The key, according to researchers, is to acknowledge your desires and be
realistic with your goals. In a controlled experiment, women who tried to
suppress all thought of chocolate ate 50% more than those who were encouraged
to talk freely about their cravings. It’s thought the same psychological
mechanism could make it harder for smokers to give up as well. So if you’re
trying to make your mind a chocolate free zone, or anything else you have
cravings for, you could actually be making yourself want it more. Of course now
you’ve read this that doesn’t mean you can stuff yourself to your heart’s
content, unless it’s anti-cholesterol chocolate that is.

HERIB

The Hull and East Riding Institute for the Blind is holding their Christmas
concert on Monday 3rd December at Cottingham Civic Hall. The entertainment will
be provided by the ‘MICE’ society (Men in Charitable Endeavour), and Helena
Richards, a local talent, will also be performing.
You can go along and sing some carols, and enjoy a mince pie or two I’m told.
Doors open at 7.30pm for the performance to start at 8pm. Tickets are £6
available from Lisa at HERIB on 01482 342297. There will be refreshments
available, and of course all proceeds go to HERIB to help local people with
sight loss. It’s all for a very good cause, and if you can make it along I hope
you have a very good time.

Don’t forget if you miss the programme or if you come home late and want to
catch up on all the day’s news and stories, you can see Look North on the
internet at our website www.bbc.co.uk/looknorthhull. You can watch the
programme in full or you can view some of our top stories individually. If you
haven’t had a look then try it out, and if you have any stories or something to
tell me about, or if you have a picture for the programme then you can always
drop me a line at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well that’s it from me for today, I hope you can join me tonight at the usual
time on BBC One for Look North. I’ll see you then.

Bye for now

Peter
