Hi there and welcome to today’s Levy Letter. It’s been a busy morning at the
Olympics. Did you catch the 10km open water marathon over breakfast? I won’t
spoil the result in case you haven’t seen it yet, but it was very exciting. And
I was amazed at how these athletes could sprint to the finish even after 10km
of hard swimming!

Table Tennis

And speaking of the Olympics, here’s something I’d never heard of before. Table
tennis isn’t a game that’s particularly well known apart from during the
Olympics, but it’s certainly a surprisingly exciting game to watch. I’ve read
though that the top table tennis players have used for a while a kind of glue
to boost the power and spin of their shots as the ball hits their paddle. But
this ‘speed glue’ could put these athletes’ health at risk as they may inhale
its toxic fumes. Before each match, the competitors will glue a fresh rubber
covering onto their paddle, but the fumes from the glue can make them feel
dizzy. A Japanese player collapsed apparently last year whilst gluing his bat
falling into a coma for six days. Although there’s no direct link confirmed
between the glue and this table tennis player’s condition, there are still
concerns about the fumes let off by the glue. Based on these concerns though,
the International Table Tennis Federation have banned glues like !
these and the Beijing games will be the last time they’re used. There are
concerns though that by banning players from using this ‘speed glue’, the game
will slow down and not be as exciting. We’ll have to wait and see I suppose at
2012!

File Sharing

Well, they threatened to do it and now it looks like the computer companies are
fighting back against illegal file-sharing. A British woman, who put a game on
a file-sharing network, has been ordered to pay damages to the game’s creator.
The computer games company behind a pinball game has won more than £16,000
following legal action against a woman from London, who shared her copy of
their game online. Well, is this the start do you think for more law suits like
this? Online piracy is a huge concern not just for computer games companies,
but for the music industry as well.

Well, that's it from me for now. I hope your day is going well. Join me tonight
if you can at the usual time of half past six.

Take care,

Peter
