Hi there, and welcome to the start of another week’s worth of Levy Letters.
Lots of stuff going on over the weekend, including the Challenge Cup Final at
Wembley and the Freedom Festival in Hull. And if you weren’t involved or
attending any of those, then it was also the final of ‘Last Choir Standing’ on
BBC One! An unusual success that programme, I thought. And the same can be said
for its presenter as well, Myleene Klass. She’s come a long way from ‘Popstars:
The Rivals’ and her band ‘Hear’say’. Do you remember them? And what’s happened
to the rest of her pop group? She now seems to be getting lots of work as a TV
and radio presenter as well as her classical music career. Anyway, whatever you
got up to this weekend, despite the loss for Hull FC, then I hope you enjoyed
yourself. Whatever you got up to, then let me know and even send me some snaps
if you were out having a good time. It’s the usual address of [EMAIL PROTECTED]
for anything you want to chat to me about.

Flies

The flies were out in force at the weekend as usual. That’s one good thing to
be said for the Winter – not so many flies! And I was right, there doesn’t seem
to be anybody, who reads the Letter, who loves flies and objected to my
swatting tips. Quite the opposite in fact. Sheila emailed in though with an
alternative to the swatter – “Peter, you need some citronella candles or tea
lights. They work and the flies disappear. They hate the smell. You will not
have to exhaust yourself with the fly swatter.” Thanks Sheila! Clive from
Nottingham emailed in too, “I remember that back in the fifties American
scientists spent a small fortune on how flies take off and why it is so
difficult to swat them. Their conclusion was that house flies jump backwards to
take off! Instead of spending all that money, if they had asked me, I would
have told them because I’ve watched them for hours.” Thanks Clive, but did you
want to admit to watching flies! Although, I suppose when there’s a particu!
larly persistent fly, you can’t help but follow it around the room. And I
hadn’t heard this before about flies taking off backwards, but Mike in Willerby
confirmed what Clive said, “Peter, Swatting flies is quite straightforward if
you remember that they take off by leaping backwards. Aim for just behind and
above the fly, and you will score more hits than misses.” Well, I think I’ve
exhausted the top tips for fly swatters. Thanks to everyone, who emailed me!

Sea Levels

I know some people, who are a bit sceptical over global warming, especially
over the causes and the cures. Here’s the latest though. The Arctic sea ice has
shrunk to the second smallest extent since satellite records began. That’s
according to US scientists who have been closely monitoring the effects of
global warming in the Artic. On the 26th August this year, the area covered by
ice in the Artic was 2.03 million square miles. Last September, the ice covered
just 1.59 million square miles, so with a month to go, US scientists are
worried that this year may see the record broken for the amount of sea ice in
the Artic. Just to compare these figures for you, as I suppose it’s quite hard
to comprehend just how much 2.03 million square miles actually is, in 1980 the
figure was 3 million square miles. So, whether or not the 2007 record is broken
in the next few weeks, there is still a very definite trend in the declining
amount of ice and scientists are now predicting an ice-fre!
e Artic sea in the summer months much earlier than expected. Previously
computer models had predicted no ice by 2080. That predicted year has changed
to around 2030 or 2050. So there you go. Concerns yet again for the melting sea
ice in the Artic.

So on that note, and I suppose it wasn’t a particularly cheery one either,
that’s it from me! I hope you can join me tonight for Look North at the usual
time of half past six. I look forward to hearing your comments about any of the
stories on the programme. And of course, if there’s a story or issue that’s
affecting you or your family, then do let me know. We may be able to help and
feature you on the TV. So get in touch about anything at all to [EMAIL
PROTECTED] I look forward to hearing from you.

Take care,

Peter
