Hi there, its Peter here. Last night on the programme we featured the story about the fishing heritage of Coble fishing boats in Bridlington and Flamborough and about one mans hobby to restore one of these vessels called the Imperialist. Well, if you remember, after that piece I was trying to rack my brains to remember when the Sea Shanty festival is going to be on in Hull. I knew somebody would help me out with the information. Some of these old cobles are going to be on display at the festival, so heres the information if youre interested. Paul Arro from the Coble and Keelboat Society emailed me to say, Hull's Maritime Festival (as the Shanty Festival is now known) is actually this coming weekend - Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September down at the Hull Marina. The Coble and Keelboat Society will have a stand on the Marina side and further details on the 'Imperialist' project, and photographs on many other cobles too, will be available at that stand. So there you go! . For all things maritime, the Sea Shanty festival will be this weekend at Hull Marina. If youre going, then I hope you enjoy and I hope that if you take your camera with you that youll share a few snaps with me for our weather picture slot on the programme!
In A World Where I would doubt that the name of Don LaFontaine would mean much to you. It certainly didnt for me initially. But I read an obituary recently for this man, who died in Los Angeles this week at the age of sixty-eight. Hes had an incredible career spanning thirty-three years and during that time has voiced more than five thousand movie trailers. He was best known for his catchphrase used on so many trailers, In a world where This all still may not mean much to you, but as soon as you hear his voice, youd recognise him as that man who does the film trailers. Don had said about his career that it never really bothered him that no one knew his name or face, despite the fact that millions of moviegoers would recognise his voice instantly. I suppose that would mean he wouldnt get followed around by the paparazzi everywhere. And I certainly often get asked how I got into this career in the media, and lots of students nowadays are always looking for that big break to get into the! industry. Heres how Don LaFontaine did it though and his break certainly was lucky! He started in the promotions industry in the 1960s as an audio engineer when one day an announcer didnt turn up for a recording session, so he stepped in at short notice. The film trailer was the Gunfighters of Casa Grande do you know that one? The big movie bosses of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer liked his performance so much that from that point hes never been out of work. Based on contracts signed, he was perhaps the single busiest actor in the history of the Screen Actors Guild. He worked at home in a little recording studio that his wife called The Hole. His fax machine delivered the scripts to him and, until recently when he had to slow down due to ill health, he was averaging about seven to ten voiceover sessions a day! What a career! So next time you watch a film trailer, listen out for the voiceover man as it may be the work of Don LaFontaine who died recently. Man Drought Single men out there perhaps should get a single ticket to Oz! New census figures have shown that Australia is suffering from an unprecedented man drought. Statistics show that there are almost one hundred thousand more females on the Continent than males. Thirty years ago, Australia was bursting with men thanks to immigration policies aimed at the male population. But that position has changed with lots of Aussie blokes in their twenties and thirties going walkabout all over the world to travel or to work. This is coupled with lots of young women travelling to the larger coastal cities looking to further their careers. This has left one town in the northern state of Queensland, where theres one single female for every twenty-three men. So there you go. Single British men should perhaps head to the warmer climes of Australia to seek a partner! Thats it from me. Join me tonight if you can for tonights Look North. I hope youre keeping well.
