Good afternoon and welcome to Thursdays Letter. I hope youre well and
enjoying your day. I expect a lot of you are looking forward to the approaching
Bank Holiday weekend. Itll be the last one for a while. I think after this
one, we wont get another Bank Holiday until Christmas? Am I right with that
one?
Fruit Juice
Heres a strange thing I read about. Have you heard of it before? Fruit juice
can dramatically reduce the effectiveness of heart and cancer drugs. These are
the claims by scientists! Potentially some drugs could be rendered useless if
they are taken at the same time as drinking certain juices like grapefruit,
orange and apple juice. This has all come about from evidence that showed that
grapefruit juice was found to shut certain drugs out of the body. And now other
juices, like orange and apple, are thought to have the same effect. So you may
think that drinking vitamin-rich fruit juices might be good for you, but be
warned if youre taking certain medication and seek advice from your GP. Thats
the warning from this. I also read that for twenty years, scientists have known
that grapefruit juice can also boost the potency of some drugs, increasing the
risk of an overdose. But new research suggests the opposite can also happen
with other fruit juices. So theres the warning. !
Back Pain
Back pain can be crippling for many people and I believe it affects a great
many people too. However, perhaps we should look towards ballet dancers for the
answer as I read that long-term back pain can be relieved simply by encouraging
sufferers to adopt good posture. And researchers are calling this the Alexander
technique, which teaches patients how to sit, stand and walk in a way that
relieves pain by focusing on their coordination and posture. So, are you
slouching at your desk while youre reading this? Well sit up straight!! Thats
the key to helping relieve long-term back pain. Amazingly, about half of the UK
population suffers from back pain, with up to 15% going on to have chronic
problems. And this was the statistic that I remembered its the second
biggest cause of sick leave, accounting for five million lost working days a
year. Thats incredible isnt it?
Well, that's it from me for now. Just time to mention an email I received from
Keith at the Hull and District Amateur Radio Society. He wrote in to say they
will be putting on a display and will have all amateur radio equipment working
using the call signs GX8GBY and GX3AMW at the Hull Sea Shanty festival on
Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September. All will be welcome! So there you go,
if youre interested in amateur radio, then there are the details from Keith.
Join me tonight if you can for tonights programme.
Take care,
Peter
