Hi there. Here’s the last Levy Letter of the week and of course we’ve got the
Bank Holiday weekend approaching us now. If you’ve got the long weekend off
work, then I hope you enjoy yourself. If you have to work, then I hope it won’t
be too busy for you!

Message In A Bottle

This is an incredible tale. A man, who threw a message in a bottle into the sea
when he was child, has been reunited with it twenty-three years on. Donald
Wylie was just eleven years old when he tossed the bottle into the sea at
Sandside beach at Deerness on Orkney in 1985. It was found on West Sands at St
Andrews, Fife and the search for the sender of the bottle started. Donald is
now aged thirty-three and he still encourages his children to throw bottles
with messages into the sea. He says that over the years, he’s had replies from
places like Norway or Denmark. Have you ever done that? Have you ever heard
back from them?

Snail Trail

A posh stately home has become the home to a very unlikely creature! A colony
of Mediterranean snails have been found at Cliveden House, where they have
lived in secrecy for a century. These snails have never been found in the UK
before and apparently hitched a ride over to the UK from Italy in a balustrade
bought by Lord Astor, a former owner of the mansion. They were found during
cleaning and they’re believed to have been living at the house since 1896. And
during that time, the snails would have had a front row seat for quite a few
seminal moments in UK politics, though whether or not they noticed what was
going on, I’m not sure. Nancy Astor, the wife of the second viscount, was the
first woman MP to take her seat. In the 1930s, ministers, prime ministers and
other dignitaries regularly came to Cliveden to discuss import affairs of the
state. And then in 1961, there was the notorious meeting of Profumo and Keeler
at Cliveden House! So there you are. Special house guests t!
hat have certainly out-stayed their welcome! But I’m sure they won’t get
evicted just yet!

Fruit Juices

Yesterday, in the Letter, I mentioned about how fruit juices are believed to
have a detrimental effect on certain types of medication. And I’ve had a few
email responses, so I thought I’d share them with you. “Dear Peter, Thank you
for the warning. I also found that the chlorine in our water can interact with
vitamin supplements and fruit concentrates. It is one of the reasons why
drinking water in Holland does not contain chlorine, as some chemicals
resulting from this combination, are quite toxic. A lot of people are taking
supplements to counteract the result of a stressful life and the relative lack
of essential nutrients in our foods, because they are harvested too unripe and
transported for too long ( not fresh enough!!) or to fight cancer and thus
exposing themselves unwittingly to more risks! It needs a lot more research
from objective parties not intimidated by politics or financial implications.”
That one from Brenda. I hadn’t heard about the chlorine in Holland be!
fore, but thanks Brenda for those views.

Ruth writes, “The leaflets enclosed with all drugs tell you what you can and
can't have if on certain medications. For example, Simvastatin users to reduce
cholesterol are warned not to drink grapefruit juice.”

And finally, this one caught my eye from Anthony, who, in his words, is “69
years old and not out!! – and not going out for a while!!” Thanks Anthony for
your email – “One becomes sick and tired of all the advice about what to eat
and drink and what not to eat and drink. The simple fact is that we will all be
dead before we get to 100 years old - so ignore all these prophets of doom and
just eat and drink what you fancy.”

Well on that note from Anthony, I hope you all enjoy your weekend and if you’re
risking the BBQ or going out for a meal or cooking up a nice Sunday roast, then
I hope you enjoy your meal!!

Have a lovely weekend and join me tonight for the programme if you can.

Take care,

Peter
