Hi there, it’s Peter here! I hope you’re well. I did say that I thought we’d
run out of things to say about flies! But not so! Honestly, here’s the last
email on the matter from Carole in Haxey near Doncaster. She writes, “My
husband’s Dad, Bill from Rossington in South Yorkshire, bought us one of the
best presents we've had in ages - a battery fly swatter!! It’s shaped like a
tennis racket with a little button on the side. All you have to do is place it
near a fly and when it tries to fly away, press the button on the side and it
kills the insect swiftly, with no mess either! It’s great - sometimes me and my
hubby Colin have competitions to see who can get the most!!” Each to their own
I suppose! Thanks Carole for getting in touch with me.

Take The Stairs

It’s quite a dilemma isn’t it when you’re faced with the stairs or the lift.
But Swiss researchers have said that making the right choice of taking the
stairs at work could save your life. That’s quite a claim! This study has
looked at banning the use of lifts and escalators, which would eventually lead
to better fitness, less body fat, trimmer waistlines and a drop in blood
pressure. This all came from Swiss scientists studying the habits of 69 people.
And simply by taking the stairs regularly, the Swiss team think this could
translate to a 15% cut in the risk of dying prematurely from any cause. I
suppose taking the stairs could be a relatively easy thing to change in our
lifestyles. I would have thought most people, who work in an office like
myself, have a fairly sedentary lifestyle – there’ll be a trip to the coffee
machine or a trip to the printer perhaps. But that hardly counts as exercise.
Although, I suppose every so often the newsroom will get to see me running ove!
r to the studio for the programme if I’m a bit late! But I’m not sure that
counts either. But here’s the tip for us all, take the stairs if we can.

Degree

I know I’ve mentioned in the Letter before about the strange degrees you can
get nowadays in just about any subject you can think of. What was it before? A
diploma in fast food retailing I think it was. Well, here’s the latest
qualification you can get – a degree to be a Redcoat! A sea side resort has
teamed up with a university to train aspiring entertainers in a two year course
in musical theatre. A final year can be added to the course to gain a BA (Hons)
in music. So there you go. Seaside entertainers can now get a qualification for
their chosen career!

Cake

It’s amazing what people will buy isn’t it? A large slice of cake has just been
sold for £1000 at an auction house in Gloucestershire and it’s 27 years old.
I’m not sure if it would still taste nice! But I doubt anyone will be eating
this particular fruit cake as it was made to celebrate the wedding of Lady
Diana Spencer and Prince Charles. The nine inch square piece of cake was given
to Moyra Smith, a cleaner at Clarence House in London, by a royal chef and it
comes with a signed thank you letter to Mrs Smith from the royal couple.
Although there have been quite a few slices of the royal couple’s wedding cake
sold, this one has a very beautiful royal coat of arms in icing. For its 27
years, the cake has been preserved in clingfilm, but it would have come from
one of the 23 wedding cakes officially made and most probably came from a
single-tier cake sent to the staff as a thank you to Clarence House. So one
anonymous collector wanted to get his slice of history, but for £100!
 0!

Well, that's it from me. Children In Need is approaching! It’s time for you to
get your fundraising hats on. The fundraising packs, to help you do this, will
be arriving soon. You’ll be able to pick them up from the Open Centre in Hull
and the receptions in Grimsby and Lincoln by next week hopefully. From this
weekend, I’ll be able to tell you who to phone too if you want more information
on how to raise money for Children In Need. So watch this space and I’ll give
you more details about it all soon.

Take care and join me tonight if you can for Look North,

Peter
