And if we wanted to include Debian based "alien" which can convert
between dpkg, rpm, and tarballs (for "make")...wow, can I see the fun
non-Debian folks will have trying to encompass the various options
there. But then the Debian oriented community will have the same with
the "yum" or "YaST" or <insert your favorite RPM higher level package
management utility of choice here>.
alien deals with tgz packages (from slackware), not source code. It
also doesn't do that good a job on a lot of rpms. It can't, since the
scripts in the package are usually distribution specific. It is at best
a crappy hack.
It might be a "crappy hack" by your interpretation, and I am in no way
defending nor condemning it. However, it is a method of package
management which is what this thread is about...or at least was. So if
one wanted to include rpm <-> yum <-> alien <-> apt-get/aptitude <->
dpkg concepts, as I mentioned earlier...the list of which utilities to
include can get quite extensive.
And as you just proved, not everyone likes nor approves of certain
methods or means for package management. It would be left for the exam
maintainers to decide there, assuming the objectives were altered to
reflect such requirements or desires for package management at whatever
level of LPI we wish to look at here.
Again, my position is KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid)...tarballs (i.e.,
"make" oriented), rpm, and dpkg and be done with it.
