SuSE uses YaST...

For clarification, SuSE is RPM based, YaST is a higher level package management and system configuration utility.

Gentoo uses portage/emerge

./configure; make; make install is still used by everyone!

portage/emerge is base off of "make" package management.

And if we wanted to include Debian based "alien" which can convert between dpkg, rpm, and tarballs (for "make")...wow, can I see the fun non-Debian folks will have trying to encompass the various options there. But then the Debian oriented community will have the same with the "yum" or "YaST" or <insert your favorite RPM higher level package management utility of choice here>.

Not to pick on a mentor and colleague of mine...Ross Brunson, but I recall when he was teaching the basis of package management for the LPI Boot Camp series way back when (this was around 2002 when LPI did not have a dpkg and rpm split in the LPI-101; this first split came shortly afterwards per memory), everyone in the room was exposed to all the various means and ways of rpm, dpkg, and make. It was quite a bit of information, and overwhelming for those not exposed to other methods for the first time. Ross even had me explain the dpkg side of things in more detail since I was doing Debian a bit back then (before my migration to Gentoo), but in the end what helped the students was knowing that this was one part of the exam, so perhaps 3-6 questions at best on this topic section.

Again, some history and thoughts since as others will also state...this is not the first time this has come up.
