Strangely the Galliarde of Clarkes does not have that problem so
much, nor does the galliarde to delighte.
I don't think a microphone can be too good. It may be too directional.
John Buckman of Magnatune uses damping on the ceiling or the walls.
Perhaps, curtains partly drawn could help.

The answer must be in the placement of the microphones. The sock
would probably remove some high frequency content, which
may not necessarily be the answer. Jacob Heringman says he places a
pair of mics at the height of the ears of an average person standing
before him.
He says the diagonal line from mics to lute bridge is usually about 6
feet or so.
This sounds a little further than what you have, but it also sounds
closest to the solution for Delight Galliard which does sound good.
"Microphones on stand, 2 meters away from me, 1m70 high (about where
my ears are when I'm standing). "
Galliarde of Clarkes is next closest to JH's ideal (and still quite
good) and then the Dowland is furthest from JH's ideal, which does
not seem so good.
You are probably, gradually going away from the ideal position.

It could be best to begin with the Delight Galliard position, and
then tweak distance and height from there.
Best regards
Anthony
