Indeed, outdated repositories are unfortunate.

You are right to try to avoid compiling. It brings complications.

Well, it's not as bad as it seems. RC3 means it was almost the final
version. I would be confident that the code to produce the program
you're running does come from the official LyX team (with perhaps minor
modifications perhaps by Debian and/or Ubuntu). It's just that it was a
*pre*-release meant for testing.

In my opinion, the unfortunate part is that the package was never
updated to 2.4.1, 2.4.2, etc.
