Dear Uwe, many thanks for the helpful explanations; much appreciated.

I can't provide a screen-shot (for it must be remembered that THAT LyX 
installation (my first) was defective, with frequent crashes -- a problem since 
fixed by correctly down-loading the carbon version for my Mac -- with not one 
crash so far) but here's my description of the "picture":

What was I doing that could possibly have contributed to this phenomenon? I was 
certainly trying to get LyX to work in line with my understanding of the 
Manuals. BUT I did also introducing some simple LaTeX coding into the document 
to see how it performed. That's about it; me having no other clue as to what 
was going on.
