Hi Travis,

1. My understanding is that there may be some overhead savings in using tabs
instead of windows in Safari as far as using system resources goes, but that
really enters in when you have a large number of windows open at the same time.
Switching windows in Safari has had the advantage of returning your VoiceOver
focus to the same place when using earlier versions of Mac OS X.

2. If you're using Tiger, I recall that I used Gutenprint (which used to be
called Gimp-Print) as a source of printer drivers. Earlier versions of Mac OS
X did not come with printer drivers. In Tiger, support for an unfamiliar
printer could usually be found in an updated Gutenprint download. And by
Leopard, Apple incorporated Gutenprint into its release. This is a common
SourceForge product that is also used on Linux and other platforms. I haven't
used this for some time, though.

You can still get Gutenprint from:
http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php

However, I always find the Macupdate site an easier place to check:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/9055/gutenprint

The latest version release is dated May 2011 (pre-Lion)

From the Gutenprint FAQ:
        • Gutenprint (formerly called Gimp-Print) is a package of high quality
printer drivers for Mac OS X, Darwin, Linux, BSD, Solaris, IRIX, and other
UNIX-alike operating systems. In many cases, these drivers rival or exceed the
OEM drivers in quality and functionality. Our goal is to produce the highest
possible output quality from all supported printers. To that end, we have done
extensive work on screening algorithms, color generation, and printer feature
utilization. We are continuing our work in all of these areas to produce ever
higher quality results, particularly on the ubiquitous, inexpensive inkjet
printers that are nonetheless capable of nearly photographic output quality.
Additionally, Gutenprint provides excellent drivers for many printers that are
otherwise unsupported on Mac OS X.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
