TextEdit manages fine but doesn't cope with the logo and also they can't open it at their end (they say).
Sounds like they do want .doc files then. TextEdit can't save files with embedded images as .doc, they have to be saved as .rtfd, which a Windows machine won't recognise.
Hmmm.
If they don't want PDF, might they consider HTML? That presents extra problems, though, because then you'd have to start sending two files (the image and the HTML file) together, and ensuring that they stay together throughout the process...
It's looking like OpenOffice might be worth a try. It's pig-ugly, but it works.
Or, you could use XAbiWord, which like OO, needs to run under X11. It's a much smaller download than OO, and starts a lot quicker. Again, not nice to look at but does everything required when it comes to handling .doc files.
