My guess is that the transfer from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X used 
Appleshare/IP and the transfer from Mac OS X to Mac OS 9 is using plain 
old Appleshare. There is an amazing difference in speed between the two 
because Appleshare has a lot more overhead and uses packets that are 
much smaller.

Maybe you're seeing one of the main reasons why Apple is throwing the 
old-fashioned Appleshare overboard.
