Very good point Allen. A few years ago, I wanted a set of good kitchen
knives and settled on a set of Henckels from a catalog. On a whim, I
stopped by Heimerdingers and checked out what they had in stock. Their
prices were about 20-30% higher than the catalog. I approached the
manager, showed him what I had found in the catalog, and told him I
would much prefer keeping my dollars local than sending them to a
company out of state, and asked if what he might be able to do. He told
me to hang on, got out his calculator and when he got done, he was
within $25 of the set in the catalog (catalog price $299, Heimerdinger
price $325 or so). That was close enough for me. I bought the set and
haven't regretted it since.

Most local companies, especially smaller ones, want your business. They
may not be able to dicker enough to match prices, but they can almost
always offer some discount. The instant gratification of taking your
products with you when you leave can be worth the extra money you may
spend. Plus, every dollar you spend locally not only supports the local
business, but the local economy in general.
