I have been reading this thread. As a designer of 20 years and working in 
Photoshop for 16 years at least once a week someone sends me a 72dpi 
photo/image that is 3"x5" and wants to make it bill board size. It has never 
worked in all my years.

My soapbox preach is. . . always shoot (camera), work (illustrator, freehand, 
photoshop) in hi-res. You can click a button to "save as" and res it down and 
once the pixels are gone there is no magic to bring them back again.

The way a college professor explained it to our class (many years ago) and 
showed us, was he took a photo that was 3" x 5" and shrunk it 1.5" x 2.5" and 
then blew it up to 11" x 17". It didn't work. I always remembered that.
