Hi all,

I just got my latest TWC/Spectrum bill, and lo and behold, it was 30% higher
than the month before, and included a sports programming fee, an extra DVR
service charge, an extra charge for a settop box that my wife was told was free
[1] when she got it.

Anyways, all in all, if I pay this highway robbery [2], I'll end up paying
nearly $2,000/year for internet and TV [3].

I started my usual routine of planning the annual call to ask why loyal
customers get screwed while new customers get cheap prices, only to find out
that Spectrum has eliminated all packages close to what I have, and going for
separate services would be $5 less per month.

Thus, I figure I need to threaten to leave for the Uverse/DirectTV world. BUT
before I do this, I want to be sure that the threat is real. What I found was:
I can get channels similar to what I have now.
I can get 1/2 of the download speed(!): 24Mbps vs. 50 Mbps
for (supposedly) $110/mo.
The UVerse offers on line claim equipment fees for up to 4 rooms, HD DVR
service, Wi-Fi gateway 'to my devices', all for free. If this is the case, then
including taxes, the bill should be about $115/month instead of TWC's
$164/month.

Here are the questions for this group:

Earlier indications seem to say that the UVerse internet 'experience' is crap
(bad modems, slow speed, etc.) Is it crap or not that bad?

When AT&T claims that the above-mentioned services are free, are they truly
free, or are there things like the rental-car companies have, with recovery
fees and CEO bonus fees and keep-my-cousin-employed fees? How close is
$110/month to the truth? [4]

If UVerse is crappy and TWC is thieving, does anyone have any other
suggestions. The one sticking point is including lots of sports channels for my
wife.

Thanks for any tips,

Bill

[1] I guess for a year?
[2] Monopoly robbery?
[3] So, nearly my property taxes for supporting things like roads, schools, and
other things far less frivolous.
[4] In this post-truth world.
