The partition that Drive Genius created showed up fine . . .the one with the 
issue was one of the preexisting partitions (not the one that drive Genius 
shrunk). I don't quite understand why it showed up in every tool I had, could 
be booted from successfully, but when in Finder (even as the boot volume) was 
not visible unless I used the Go to Folder menu option . . .and then it showed 
up but was grayed out sort of like a locked preference is.

No matter . . . erasing the errant volume fixed it and I reinstalled the OS . . 
.it's an emergency boot SL partition anyway.
