No, I surely don't mean those CD drives. Those CD drives weren't writeable
devices.
If you reconsider the time line between when optical drives arrived that users
could use to actually store and exchange their own stuff, vs. when floppies
(which users had been using for this purpose for years) were yanked out of the
product line, you will find that this six years goes to... um... NEGATIVE THREE
YEARS. The original 1998 iMac only came with a CD-ROM. The CD-RW wasn't
introduced until the Early 2001 iMac. A truly user-hostile decision. :-(
