Yes, but I don't want to get rid of my landline and I don't really want to use 
internet faxing services either.

I only want the computer to replace the telephone/fax machine. I'd use the 
Apple modem to connect to the landline, and I'd dial from the Mac, speak from 
the microphone, ear from the speakers, set the answering machine with the GUI 
etc.

Maybe there is something that I do not understand how phone/fax machines work, 
because I was really expecting to find a replacement software right away.

For ex, there are dialer programs, but they still require you to use the phone 
after they've dialed the number. They don't seem to make use of the 
mike/speaker hardware side of the Mac to replace the phone altogether.
