I run 10.6 as a virtual machine on my 10.8 system. The USB modem should
work fine there. VMware Fusion allows this in version 4.1. It's how, on my
lone 10.8 system, I run 32-bit apps that I need to use when in a pinch.
The USB port I plug an old serial->USB adapter in goes only to the virtual
machine which has an old driver that still works in 10.6 [but doesn't in
10.8]. So I would assume the USB modem would be the same.

The drawback is you have to keep a 10.6 VM running all the time to accecpt
faxes and make/receive phone calls.
