If you have Snow Leopard, you're in luck with FAX software, but sadly
anything newer than that, and you're going to have a problem. The USB
modem Apple made isn't supported in Lion and Mountain Lion - no drivers.

For one of my businesses, I still do run Snow Leopard [actually on all my
producton machines, as there's still too many issues with 10.7/10.8 for me
to use with the software I need to use], and use the great FAX program by
Smile Software: PageSender - http://smilesoftware.com/PageSender but sadly
it is no longer available, but it runs great on 10.6 and you might want to
e.mail them to get a trial and pay the $40 if you like it. It is much
better than the built in faxing in Snow Leopard, as it has an in/out box,
supports scheduled faxes, etc.

For voicemail, I used an Amiga for the longest time and a GVP PhonePak:

Later I played with similar software [no extra hardware other than a
fax/modem was needed] for a Mac clone. This eBay listing shows details
about it:

I'd love to know about a voicemail solution for Mac OS X though. I'd use
it in a heartbeat on the system I use for FAXing [faxing is a lot more
common than Apple likes to think it is, sadly :( ].
