Hi Kristine, Have you tried the update / reinstall using the recovery console to get the installer?
To do this shut the machine down and then hold command R during start up and make sure you hold the keys down for approx. 30 seconds, It doesn't have to be that long but I just like to be sure it goes to the correct place. Then give it a minute or so for the machine to start up and then switch on voiceover and pick the install OS X option from the utilities menu and then follow the prompts Let us know how that works for you. It sounds to me that the Installer log is confused. There are ways of editing the log, but it would probably be much easier simply to find the stand-alone installer for 10.12.2 on Apple's site.
