Hello there!
I'm having a huge package loss problem with madwifi-ng. Although the
loss rate varies, pinging the AP usually results in a loss of about 70%.
My computer is dual boot, and if I simply restart it on Win XP and ping
the AP, no losses occurs at all (so it's not an antenna problem). It's
interesting to notice that the rate of loss is not constant; in fact the
connection seens to have "bursts" of speed, as if during a certain
period of time (order of seconds) all packages would get through, and
then during the next period a large package loss, varying between 60% to
100% would occur. These periods can last from seconds to minutes, and I
saw no pattern in their timing. This is happening only in Linux with
madwifi; on windows one can run the system for hours without package
losses.

A FEW THINGS I'VE TRIED SO FAR:
--> Test different madwifi-ng versions: I've installed versions
0.0.1443, 0.0.1531, 0.9.1 and 0.9.2. The problem happens in all of them.
All these versions have been installed with Gentoo's default packages in
portage.
--> Test different kernels: Currently I'm running a x86_64 2.6.17
kernel. Before this one, I was using a 2.6.9 one. Changing the kernel
doesn't seens to help.
--> Disable background noise scanning: It seens to have improved a
little the connection, but had no significant impact on the package loss
problem.
--> Set AP distance: Just in case, I set it to 8 meters. No impact
noticed.
--> Test different channels: I've tried channels 10 and 3 (current one),
being careful to use the same on the AP and on the desktop. Nothing
changed.

WORKAROUND:
If it gets really bad, I can always restart the device with
/etc/init.d/net.ath0 restart . This usually gives at least a few seconds
of good connection, before the problem starts happening. So I've got to
have a terminal open restarting the device all the time! AARRGGGG!

POSSIBLE CLUES:
If one checks out the compatible devices list for the D-Link DWLG-520
it can be seen in the notes that a very similar device (same card, but
with firmware 4.20 - mine is 4.30) has this note:
"B3/4.20: Working in master mode, bridged to eth0, with hostapd (using
madwifi-trunk-r1325 (madwifi-1325-20051111
snapshot) - No problems once setup."
So I found these tickets:
ticket 313
ticket 407
ticket 166
Maybe they are related to the issue, maybe not. I just thought it would
be a good idea to point you to them. Anyway, as far as I know I'm
running in managed mode.
I'm not very sure on how to proceed now. If you need any further data or
tests, contact me.
Thank you very much!
