News update...
This time I've installed madwifi with the anoe algorithm instead of sample
(default ). I'll run the system with this configuration for a few days to
see how it performs. I noticed that somehow my connection starts with
medium package loss, then after a few seconds reachs a performance peak
(zero packet losses) and with time it's speed drops. With anoe this seens
to occur slower, so maybe it will work better at dealing with the bursts
of speed (periods of very fast transfers intercalated with zero transfer)
that would cancel downloads, disconnect messenger programs and give
similar trouble. However, with anoe it also seens that when the link
decides to go bad, then it'll never recover itself ( minutes of 100% lost
packets ). To solve it, just restart ath0 and the losses are greatly
reduced or even gone for some time. Anyway, I need some days of testing
to be sure that it's not only occasional luck.
As for the programs that are hanging on startup, no news. I still have to
shutdown ath0, start Eclipse, konqueror and gkrellm, then start ath0.
Otherwise they'll hang. I've got no clue on this one; any help is very
welcome. Ah, I also discovered that eventually Eclipse loads as well;
however it takes around 2 hours for it to wake up.
I'm also considering an antenna upgrade, which surely should help.
