Comment (by gfaccin):

 Humm the ticket is still open. Nice! I can now post the issue real
 solution.

 For the package loss problem: I updated my original 2 dbi antenna. The new
 one is a 5 dbi, and so the package loss reduced to about 2%.

 For the speed problem: With the new antenna and all things I've already
 tried (disable background noise and the tweaking of previous posts) I
 managed to have a maximum download rate of around 20 kbps. That's surely
 better than nothing, however that's a lot behind the windows D-link driver
 and what I used to get using madwifi-old and the 2 dbi antenna. So after
 playing with the iwpriv command:

 {{{
 conan gfaccin # iwpriv ath0 get_turbo
 ath0      get_turbo:1
 }}}

 So by default my 108 mbps card is working at full speed. That'd be perfect
 if the ap supported the technology. However the ap can only go to a
 maximum 54 mbps. So trying typing:

 {{{
 #iwpriv ath0 turbo 0
 }}}

 made the 20 kbps transfer rate improve to around 250 kbps. Simple isn't
 it? Ahh life is much better with a broader band =D
