Hello mrenzmann, thanks for the reply!
I won't give up easily. So, first of all, once more I've decided to
uninstall everything and then install again, to be sure that I'm using the
latest version. This is what I've done:
=================================================================================
( Remove current install and unload drivers )
iwconfig down ath0
emerge --unmerge madwifi-ng
rmmod ath_pci
rmmod ath_rate_sample
rmmod ath_hal
rm /etc/modules.d/ath_pci
modules-update force
( Now instead of installing a new version, I've restarted the computer. To
my surprise, the wireless initiated. So: )
#modprobe -l
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/ath_pci.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/ath_rate_sample.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_scan_ap.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_scan_sta.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_xauth.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_wep.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_tkip.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_ccmp.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan_acl.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/wlan.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net/ath_hal.ko
#modprobe -rf on each one on the above list; however they were not
removed. So:
#cd /lib/modules/2.6.17-gentoo-r4/net
#rm *
( Reboot again. Got some warnings about those deleted modules - now I'm
sure they are gone)
#emerge madwifi-ng
#modules-update
=================================================================================
When I unmerged madwifi-ng with Gentoo's portage, the modules in /lib were
not removed. This led me to this possibility: since I've already
reinstalled madwifi many times, using all versions I could find, perhaps
those modules which were in /lib were not the ones from the last install;
instead they could have been artifacts from God knows which version
(before all this started I've used a version of madwifi which I guess was
something like 1550 or similar for some weeks in this same computer
without the package loss problem).
Anyway, the problem is still there, but now I'm sure that the version
that's being loaded is the 0.9.2. However, a new bad thing started to
happen: if ath0 is up and I try to open some specific applications (namely
konqueror, gkrellm and Eclipse) those apps simply hang. In the case of
gkrellm and konqueror, after around 15 minutes they decide to awake from
their sleep and load up. For Eclipse (which I use to work =( ) I had the
patience to await half an hour without it loading. If I simply turn down
ath0, then those apps load as they should ( the startup takes no more than
a few seconds). During their sleep, those apps use no CPU at all; seens
simply like they stay sleeping waiting for something. For the other apps
in the system things look normal.
I'll keep searching for a solution. Meanwhile, if you who are reading this
can provide me with suggestions on how to proceed, please post!
Giovani
