Comment (by gfaccin):

 Just updating...

 It seens that I simply cannot connect in a mode other than managed. I
 installed hostapd and tried to set the ath0 to master, in order to try to
 reproduce the situation mentioned above for the B3/4.20 board. This leads
 to this error:

 conan init.d # ./net.ath0 start
  * Starting ath0
  * Configuring wireless network for ath0
 Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
     SET failed on device ath0 ; Invalid argument.
  * ath0 does not support setting the mode to "master"
  * ath0 connected to ESSID "godcomm" at 00:00:00:00:00:00
  * in managed mode on channel 3 (WEP enabled - open)
  *   Bringing up ath0
  *     192.168.0.51
 [ ok ]
  *   Adding routes
  *     default gw 192.168.0.1 ...
 [ ok ]

 The same happens when I try to set it to ad-hoc. One interesting thing to
 notice here is that the MAC of the ESSID gets this strange null value;
 anyway it does not seens to change the situation: I get connected to the
 ESSID just the usual way, with the huge package losses taking place.

 If on the other way I set it to "managed" mode:

 conan init.d # ./net.ath0 start
  * Starting ath0
  * Configuring wireless network for ath0
  * ath0 connected to ESSID "godcomm" at 00:15:E9:02:FC:32
  * in managed mode on channel 3 (WEP enabled - open)
  *   Bringing up ath0
  *     192.168.0.51
 [ ok ]
  *   Adding routes
  *     default gw 192.168.0.1 ...
 [ ok ]

 Now the ESSID MAC is the correct one. But the package loss is still there.
 There's another ticket around (476) which reports a similar MAC problem.
 So maybe things could be interconnected...
