In the end it turned out that my problem was a different one (showed up by
slightly different messages in hostapd output, as I now noticed) and
caused by a trivial issue: AP and client had packet loss due to very
strong signals. The distance between AP and client is ~2-3m, and the
client works with 100mW @ 2.4 GHz.
Bottom line: false alarm here, please ignore my previous 3 comments. Sorry
for all the confusion.
