Comment (by [EMAIL PROTECTED]):

 hi, thanks for the reply,

 yes, i have explicitly specified that there will be a bridge component
 within the .con file; following are my contents of madwifi.conf:
 {{{
 interface=ath0
 bridge=br0
 driver=madwifi
 logger_syslog=-1
 logger_syslog_level=2
 logger_stdout=-1
 logger_stdout_level=2
 auth_algs=3
 eapol_key_index_workaround=0
 eap_server=0
 wpa=3
 wpa_psk_file=/hostapd/wpa_psk
 wpa_key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
 wpa_pairwise=CCMP
 debug=4
 dump_file=/tmp/hostapd.dump
 ssid=wpa_test
 eapol_key_index_workaround=0
 eap_server=0
 own_ip_addr=127.0.0.1
 }}}

 also a small correction: the output listed in my first post is from a
 different .conf file, using the .conf file included in this posting i get
 a near identical output. below is the part that varies starting from the
 l2_packet_receive message, the last couple of lines reflect attempts to
 connect from a client machine:
 {{{
 l2_packet_receive - recvfrom: Network is down
 Wireless event: cmd=0x8c03 len=20
 ath0: STA 00:02:2d:70:25:98 IEEE 802.11: associated
   New STA
 No WPA/RSN information element for station!?
 Wireless event: cmd=0x8c03 len=20
 ath0: STA 00:02:2d:70:25:98 IEEE 802.11: associated
 No WPA/RSN information element for station!?
 Wireless event: cmd=0x8c04 len=20
 ath0: STA 00:02:2d:70:25:98 IEEE 802.11: disassociated
 ath0: STA 00:02:2d:70:25:98 WPA: event 2 notification
 l2_packet_receive - recvfrom: Network is down
 Wireless event: cmd=0x8b1a len=9
 Wireless event: cmd=0x8b2a len=8
 Wireless event: cmd=0x8b19 len=8
 }}}

 i am using madwifi-0.9.2-1.lvn5.i386 along with hostapd-0.4.9. also,
 under the above configuration the access point continue to broadcast the
 ssid but connectivity is "limited"

 thanks again.
