Featurewise, Google groups is a reasonable alternative to Mailman, but
Content filtering is limited to allowing or disallowing attachments of
any kind.
There's no guarantee that Google won't drop support for groups an the
future as Yahoo did for Yahoo groups.
Also, consider whether you want to give your and your user's personal
information to Google. Keep in mind that when you get a service for
free, you are the product.
