All excellent points! I would add that reputation management is a hidden tax (negative externality). This mailing list is part of the tax. I would rather pay Google a fair price for their service, even though they are a walled garden. In the days of acoustic couplers, many of us (not me!) paid for email-as-a-service. Now we pay for reputation-as-a-service or DIY-reputation. People ask me why not use AWS? The tax for DIY-hosting is much lower for one of my (compute-bound) businesses than utility computing. We all make different economic tradeoffs based on our interests and skills. Rob
