I received a response about the poor quaity of product from
gisdatadepot. Here is what they told me:
The fact of the matter is that the data that you received is not in fact
corrupt, but the actual "correct" most up to date version of the actual
USGS
data (provided by them to us). What they failed to inform the user
community
of (us included) was that the new regenerated DEMs (to remove the
positonal
shift), were being generated using the new profile. This new profile is
actualy two years old and all of the software vendors knew of the change
and
neglected to incorporate it into their algortihms (all except ESRI and
ArcGIS). Thusly, the issues you are having were unforseen by us and
would
have been identical if you purchased the data from USGS.
In Jefferson county Alabama alone, I found 17 out of 28 quads that are
unuseable because of too many artifacts or pathological sink holes. I
have developed a work around for the missing Record A's, but if the data
is bad I still can't use it. My question is why would a company
knowingly put out a defective product. Doesn't make sense to me. Also,
if I order data in native format from the usgs, there is no problem with
it. It's only this #@$%&! SDTS crap that is bad.
