Well this has escalated downward over the days (it's getting almost as bad
as my MapInfo improvements message). I think that New Directions is
providing a very good service and price for the DEM data that they sell on
CD. Let's not take this out on New Directions. I like the ability to
purchase an entire State of SDTS data on 1 CD for a little over $100. I know
that $100 is a lot of money to some especially students. This is why
Directions needs to increase the free download speed, and allow multiple
selections for the SDTS data. No matter how fast your connection is, it
takes time to download the quads you need from any site, so the $100 is
worth my time. My beef has been that you can't use the software currently
on the market to convert the SDTS data back to DEM ASCII format data. Others
have reported that there are quality problems with some of the new data and
this needs to be addressed by New Directions. Somewhere along the line it
was lost on somebody that the DEM data is used for other applications and
not just GIS. Taking the "Old" data off line and replacing it with the "New"
data presents many different problems.
