"Because Trotsky had been the original architect of the Red Army, Stalin always viewed it's officer corps with deep suspicion and carried out extensive purges in the years 1937-38 just as he had withinin the Bolshevic Party itself... A particularly consequential loss was Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky, a military genius who had done more than anyone to modernize the Soviet armed forces. For his troubles Tukhachevsky was, like so many, tortured into making a false confession and shot.
