But it would have been wiser and not unprincipled for the organizers to have acknowledged and signalled remorse for the attacks on Israeli non combatants. They could have done so while pointing to the hugely disproportionate number of Palestinian civilians, many of them children, killed and maimed by the Israelis in reprisal. Unfortunately, many in the solidarity movement appear to be more committed to demonstrating their passionate support for the Palestine cause than in building the movement by recognizing and taking into account the lower level of understanding of the conflict by the wider population. Even those watching the marches from the sidelines who are horrified by the genocide and sympathetic to the Palestinians generally accept the right of Israel to exist. They only wish for the oppression of the Palestinians to end and for Israel to peacefully coexist with its neighbours. They are therefore prone to interpreting the conspicuous display of Palestinian flags, kaffiyehs, chants, and other symbols as confirmation that Palestinian freedom means driving the Jews into the sea.
