You meant to say the Soviet state, Tony. The Moscow Trials line was that Trotsky and the other Old Bolsheviks were calling for the overthrow of the Soviet state and the restoration of capitalism. Trotsky was instead calling for the overthrow of the Soviet government headed by Stalin, ie. for a political revolution by the Soviet workers and peasants against the governing Stalinist faction rather than a counter-revolution to destroy the Soviet Union. You and others on the list already know all this, and the distinction between the actual program of the Left and Right Opposition and what they were falsely accused of conspiring towards in league with the fascists is also widely understood and accepted on the Marxist left and well beyond it today. Consequently, I don't think another "separate fight" on this question as you suggest is required. The outlandish conspiracy theory of Grover Furr and his acolyte has been exhaustively discussed and rejected on the list. I can understand why the moderators have discouraged further discussion but, rather than urging that these calumnies be ignored, this is one of those rare occasions when I would welcome Louis' (sometimes overzealous) policing of the list. I've come around to the view expressed by others that further posts by this lone individual on the subject should be intercepted by the moderators and returned to sender. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
