HowzitIt's quite normal for a new engine to run a little hotter than usual. Where is it running on the gauge. With a 180 thermostat normal is between E M but if it's constantly over the M it's a bit hot but not enough to damage anything. The cam should be dialled in using the V in the sprocket and the static mark on the thrust plate, you can't go wrong if you use this method. Why did you use #2, was #1 off the notch in the thrust plate.L18 freshly rebuilt is still running too hot for my liking. Ive checked the
thermostat (180 F) works fine and its water is definately flowing good the
radiator was recently rebuilt so it shouldn't be blocked. Im wandering if
the cam wasn't dialed in correctly or the timing was off if it would cause
this to over heat.
I am running the cam sprocket on # 2 but there was still a decent gap in theUnless you timed it correctly you'll never know, it's easy to check with the rocker off. I'd have a look at the ignition timing and also richen the carb just a bit while you're bedding in the new engine.
spring tensioner and both the head and block have been shaved should this
have been on #3? i was a little unsure if the cam was at TDC. The dowel was
slightly to the left of vertical but i assumed it was ok here probably
should have been dead straight up.

What do you reckon?
