Rick,
I take it your old man was in RSA at some time and I think the car he had
was prolly a H510 SSS and not a P510 SSS although both of these were
produced in RSA. The RSA made Datsun 1800 (H510) SSS was a very interesting
Datto as it had a L18 with A87 head, 9.5:1 pistons, 4-2-1 header but with a
single carb and a 5 speed dogleg long box but with a weirdo rear xmember
that used the stock 1600 floor mounting points. The SSS engine was rated at
114 bhp (SAE) which wasn't too bad for it's day. It had Datsun1800 badges
where our 1600 badges are on the guards and a badge on the right hand side
of the boot and one of the major differences was the rear tail lights were
different to the 1600, they looked more like a 180B but were a bit thinner.
A mate who has done up many 1600's as he works for Lennocks bought a traded
in 510 SSS from a RSA embassy staff member that was actually assembled in
RSA that had a H510 SSS engine and gearbox transplanted into it but
unfortunately it's a crying shame that that car was written off by a pissed
dickhead outside a local football club.

An interesting thing about Nissan in RSA is that they were the last plant in
the world (afaik) to produce genuine body panels for the 510 and production
stopped circa 1991. Lennocks were still able to get front guards and sills
etc from RSA until a couple of years ago - btw a new primered 510 guard in
~98 cost $500 up front. The 510 must have been fairly popular over there but
we don't hear much about any clubs or anything.

cya
Terry

Terry.
I thought my old man was pulling my leg when he told me that when he had a
1600 SSS in South Afrrica it came with a L18 as they were stopping
production on the 1600's to go onto the 180B's.
He also said his was badged up as datsun 1800 SSS.
LOL
I really thought he was stuffing around with my head.
Now I know otherwise.
