The auto (and all wagons) have the bigger trans tunnel.
On the 'bolt-in' subject I think it is trial and error. On my old green 1600
I had a skyline 5 speed fitted with some type of factory gearbox
crossmember. When I fitted the same setup to my existing 1600, the gearbox
hits the top of the trans tunnel. We think my green 1600 may have been an
ex-automatic - but you never know!
