Alan, Here is how you wire the impulse type of tacho into a 1600. The 2 blue wires connect into the positive coil loom wires and the other 2 wires in the centre of the tacho are for 12v battery power and earth. Don't be tempted to splice into the ignition circuit behind the dash unless you can see a pigtail wire that's usually got heaps of insulation tape wrapped around it. The impulse wires must be wired into the loom as close to the coil as possible but I've found that not all 1600's are wired like this. The 1600 SSS wiring loom is different from the Deluxe/GL etc as it caters for the coil circuit to have this type of tacho. Some models circa 1971/72 actually have the wires to the coil already in the loom with a pigtail connector that's removable and allows you to simply remove the pigtail wire and plug in the blue tacho wires.
If you have to add the impulse wires then here are step by step instructions. You will need some male & female spade connectors and 2 wires long enough to go from the blue wires on the tacho when fitted into the dash to the coil. I use what's called figure 8 wire for the coil and good quality speaker wire will do and if you're lucky one of the wires will have a stripe which is useful. Connecting it up. I usually connect up the tacho to check that it's working correctly before fitting into the dash - it's easier to trouble shoot that way. Remove the loom wire from the positive side of the coil. Connect one of the wires of the F8 wire to the positive coil terminal (I use the solid colour on speaker wire for positive coil terminal with female spade connector) and connect the other side of the F8 wire (striped with male spade connector) to the positive coil wire in the loom that you just pulled from the coil. Look at the tacho from the back. The 2 blue wires loop through the plate vertically. Fit a female spade connector to the bottom wire and a male spade connector to the top wire. The blue wire at the bottom goes to the positive side of the coil so connect it to the other end of the F8 wire with solid colour. The blue wire on top goes to the existing wire in the 1600 loom that was on the positive terminal of the coil. Now for the other wires i.e. +12v battery and Earth. Look at the back of the tacho again with the blue loop wires at the bottom of the tacho. You'll see a small circuit board down the hole, one wire will go through the board and disappear and the other wire turns right above the board and also disappears. The wire that goes though the hole in the board is the Negative and therefore the other wire is the Positive. Some 1600 tacho of this type have two external plug in connectors in the housing for lighting. Some 1600 looms have the plug that you can just connect into the dash lighting circuit and on the loom side it is a 3 pin female connector. The colours loom side to the connector are Green/red, Green/black and Black. If your car hasn't got the connector then it's pretty easy to just splice into another light circuit, the green wires on the tacho plugs are positive and the black wire that are joined together and the negatives. They do loop through the plate with the 'long screw thingy' like you said. The green wire has a spade crimp and the black has also been cut. They go into the centre of the back, there is no grommet but it's probably just fallen off at some stage. If you can give me some ideas i'd really appreciate it.
