I don't totally agree with that - in my day we were taught to place the jack directly under the ball joint so the lower control arm was solid until the wheel was just off the ground enough to fit a bar under the tyre - then with the bar you lifted the wheel up and looked for the movement in the ball joint.
However, i found this method inconclusive in the modern day vehicle, as the ball joints are constructed differently - very similar to diagnose as shot wheel bearings when you rock the wheel at 3 & 9 o'clock. regards Terry > > Jack up the body and place it on stands so the suspension hangs.
