Guys, jacking under the ball joint to check for play only works with a "loaded joint" setup ie. Holden HQ. With the McPherson strut, jack the car under the crossmember, remembering to place it on stands, this will unload the joint. Once supported, you can then lever the lower control arm up and down and measure any vertical play. If it's as bad as it sounds, you should be able to feel this with your hands. To keep things in perspective, it might pay to loosen the nut on the lower inner pivot before doing this as the rubber will tend to make it twist and not give a definite indication. Make sure that you tighten the lower inner nut when the car is back on the ground and not in the air. I would be looking at 3mm max play. Lach

However, i found this method inconclusive in the modern day vehicle, as the ball joints are constructed differently - very similar to diagnose as shot wheel bearings when you rock the wheel at 3 & 9 o'clock. regards Terry > > Jack up the body and place it on stands so the suspension hangs.
