I'm 55 and my Dad had problems with his colon and other stuff - he never would talk about it and my mom would tell what she knew which was not much. In any case, my Urologist says I should have a colonscopathy every other year. I kept putting it off and in Dec my right leg started swelling - my regular doc had a doppler done and it said no blood clot (for which I am truely thankful - had one 7 years ago and it was no fun) - he sent me to a vascular doc - who said *his* doppler was better and he would do a CT scan also - the doppler was negative again and the CT scan showed a enlargement on my colon - he put me on Cipro and said I shoud have a colonscopathy as soon as he could schedule it. Like the others, I took the GoLyghtly (Ha!) and had the exam - don't remember *any* of it after being wheeled into the room - woke up and went home. Again, as others have said, the night before was the worst part of it - when I have it done again, I'll insist on the pills instead of the liquid. So, I *finally* had it done - the good news, the enlargement he found was not cancerous and the polyp he found and removed was not cancerous, for which I am truely thankful.

Not looking forward to the next one though. Also, my Dad had prostate cancer (which eventually killed him) and so I get to have a yearly exam (yipppeeee!) and so far they have all been without incident.

Probably the 2 most unpleasant tests a man can go thru and yet it's something those of us over 50 or so need to have done on a regular basis. Thankfully, if they ever *do* find something it's usually very curable if caught early.

Now you know much more about me than you *ever* wanted to know!

<LOL>

they don't hurt b/c of the sedative, and they're fun to watch (if you're not sedated, or a med student). if they find polyps, they use an argon laser to
vaporize them (really sweet) or electrocautery with the end of the probe
(smells).

Honestly, the worst part is the night before, where you have to drink
Go-Lytely (WORST LIE EVER) and flush out your colon. You're definitely NOT
going lightly.  But it's ok.

I'm really angry at my dad b/c he refuses to get one. Won't listen to me
because I'm his kid, not his doctor, but I'll work on him some more.

My Doc said 50 yrs old. I put it off for three years, had it done last

Cost about $300 out of pocket.(Medicare only) Do it again in 5 years.

        I'm Forty Nine soon to be fifty, I was under the impression that
forty was the age to start looking up there. I have asked Drs if it
should be done and they sem to shy away. I almost feel like I have to
insist that they violate me. To date I have not had one. I don't want
to die from that.
