I get 30 - 35 in both my 94's with Megasquirt ECUs. One has 300hp to the wheels and weighs just under 2000lbs, the other is stock except for the MS, no MAF, header. It has 249k miles on it.

I would guess that you would run into the law of diminishing returns with starting as a miata as a base but I would love to be proven wrong. If it were me I would find a stand alone ECU, get a hard top, strip out as much weight as possible, get the nice new rolling resistance Michelin tires and see where that gets you. BTW, do you have a time frame on that $7 gas? that seems quite a bit higher than most of the predictions that I have heard floating around.
